Malmö Sector 5 is a complex all level sector. It covers a triangular shaped area formed by Oslo, Stockholm and Copenhagen and operates on 128.625 MHz. It has a lower limit of FL285 in the eastern half of the sector, where Stockholm Sector 2 and Malmö Sector L extend beneath it.

The main tasks of sector 5 are:

  • En-route traffic in the sector
  • Initial descent for Oslo arrivals
  • Initial descent for Stockholm arrivals
  • Initial descent for Copenhagen arrivals
  • Descent and arrival instructions for Gothenburg

The main conflict area of Sector 5 is to the south, where north to south and south-west to north-east (and vice versa) traffic flows converge. Despite being a high level sector, a high number of vertical movements are required within Sector 5, which is due to the fact that descent to Oslo, Stockholm and Copenhagen will be initiated in the sector. Planning vertical movements well ahead of time is crucial, since it is often required to move attention around between these three different traffic flows. There is the added complexity of handling Gothenburg TMA arrivals and departures to the north.

Sector 5 can get very busy and, as a result, it will often make sense to operate it on its own. It can, however, be combined both with Sector 5 and Sector L.
